Who We Are

Founded in 2009, the Abaarso Network includes three world-class educational institutions that provide high-potential students with critical access, support, and leadership development in Somaliland, Africa.

Abaarso School is an internationally recognized 7th-12th grade co-ed boarding school outside of Hargeisa, Somaliland featured on 60 Minutes, in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, MSNBC, and Forbes. Abaarso School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and because enrollment demand is now 35x current capacity, Abaarso Network has invested further in sister institutions of Barwaaqo University and the Kaabe Schools in order to create a self-fulfilling educational ecosystem.

Founded in 2017 to become the premier higher education institution in Somaliland, Barwaaqo University is a teacher’s college and Somaliland’s only all-female university. Somali girls desperately need more positive female role models and educational opportunities that prepare them for careers that can fulfill their dreams and make a true difference to society. While current students are enrolled in a four-year School of Education, Barwaaqo plans to strategically add new professional degree programs until it has filled out a broad range of offerings.

The Kaabe Schools are a new system of K-12 day schools with Montessori-inspired elementary education. Kaabe focuses on student-centered learning and building positive relationships with local communities. These schools will be staffed with teachers from Barwaaqo University, who are specifically prepared to teach Kaabe’s curriculum, and managed by Abaarso School alumni who have returned after graduating from universities abroad. This system will be scalable, sustainable, and operated predominantly by homegrown Somali talent.
