Abaarso Network / Apply to Teach

Abaarso Network is an American-run nonprofit system of schools in Somaliland, East Africa. We have teaching opportunities at Abaarso School of Science and Technology, Barwaaqo University for Women, and the Kaabe Schools.

Abaarso School (coed, 7-12th grade, boarding school) was featured on 60 Minutes and in the New York Times when our students became the first from their country in more than 30 years to matriculate to US universities including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Penn. Our students have thrived in our boarding school environment where teachers provide extracurricular activities like clubs, sports, and advising throughout the week while providing an English-immersion experience. While we are an American-accredited school, many team members have been extremely successful despite arriving with no formal teaching experience.

Barwaaqo University (residential women’s university) is the only all-women university in Somaliland. We were featured at the Clinton Global Initiative because 100% of our bachelor’s degree graduates have earned employment in a country with greater than 90% female unemployment. Our students have thrived in our boarding environment where teachers provide extracurricular activities like clubs, sports, and advising throughout the week while providing an English-immersion experience.

Kaabe Schools (Montessori, day schools) are the first Montessori-inspired primary schools in Somaliland. Born out of a Harvard Graduate School of Education thesis, Kaabe began as a project to scale world class education in Somaliland via homegrown talent. Five years into our Kaabe journey, we have opened five campuses and more than 90% of our teachers are graduates from Barwaaqo University Teachers College. We are seeking people with primary school experience and Montessori experience.

Exit Opportunities

Abaarso Network strongly believes in promoting from within. Teachers who do well in and out of the classroom frequently get opportunities in other administrative areas including communications, finance & accounting, IT, operations, and management. In fact the majority of our management team across the organization and schools is comprised of people who initially joined the organization as teachers. This is true for AN Executive Director, AN Deputy Director, AN Director of Systems, Abaarso School Head, Barwaaqo University President, AN Chief of Staff, Abaarso Director of Finance & Operations, Barwaaqo Director of Academics, Barwaaqo Director of Finance & Operations, AN Development Manager, AN Head of Human Resources, Kaabe Deputy Director, and more.

Abaarso Network teacher alumni have gone on to a wide range of careers and higher education opportunities. Teacher alumni have led schools in places like Zimbabwe and Palestine, gone into the US Foreign Service, journalism at Al Jazeera and CBS, careers in philanthropy at Bridgespan and Walton Family Foundation, data science, cybersecurity at Google, an Assistant District Attorney, and graduate school programs at Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Cambridge, and more.
